Victoria

Back at work and loving all of the access I had to information on my so called spouse. My workload had been very light, so that I could get back into the swing of things and when I got a little break, I took the time to look up Jody’s previous activities. All this time together and I never once checked behind him. I knew that the truth would hurt, but I had yet to prepare myself for that pain.

“Don’t go snoopin’ if ya ain’t gone do nuttin’ wit ya findings,” I heard Ms. Ethel say.

Major Jody White, I typed into the system, followed by his social security number. I held my breath and waited while his criminal record was retrieved. When his record popped up on my little monitor, I grabbed the waste basket from underneath the desk and emptied the contents of my stomach.

“Get yaself together, Chile, you sought and you found. Handle ya bidness,” Ms. Ethel reminded.

I dropped my head to the desk and cried. “Ms. Ethel, I don’t know what to do. Lord, please guide me, give me strength.

My guardian angel, Ms. Ethel, had been speaking to me through death, just as she did during life. She never once steered me wrong, so I dried my tears, squared my shoulders, and picked up the phone. My first call was to Stacey Daniels, victim. Crime committed against her, criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and kidnapping.

“Hello,” Stacey answered out of breath.

“Hello Stacey, my name is Victoria. I am calling on behalf of Richland County. I am presently a probation officer here and I had a few questions for you about Major White, if you have a few moments.”

“Uuhh, questions? Do I need an attorney?” Stacey asked.

“Not at all. If you are free, maybe we could meet for coffee?”

“Sure, give me an hour, I’m at the gym. How does Starbucks on Harbison sound?”

“It sounds perfect. See ya in an hour!”
